Wikipedia says that pinging is:
an XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent to one or more “ping servers,” which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material.
Pinging helps you increase your site traffic by including links to your new content on aggregators like weblogs.com and blo.gs, where visitors browse recently updated blogs. The fresher your content and the more people know about it, the better your chances of building up a solid reader base.
